There is a great need to study human brain tissue to better understand diseases that affect the brain. That's why the "Using our Brains" program was established to collect and store brain tissue ready for distribution to leading medical researchers. In this way, researchers can develop more effective treatments and preventions for brain disease.

As with other donor programs, it is crucial that all the community is involved. If you register your interest, one of our clinicians will contact you to explain the program and organise a time to formalise consent. At this time we would also carry out a health and lifestyle interview. All of the information received will be strictly confidential and the program is monitored

by an ethics committee. We will encourage you to discuss your decision to donate with family members and your general practitioner.

By building a database of willing donors, we are developing a resource of well-characterised tissue that offers unique opportunities for medical research. There are a very small number of medical conditions that make brain tissue unsuitable for our donor program. These include a recent stroke, epilepsy, or a major infectious disease.. A clinician will be more than happy to discuss any further questions you have. Please go to the "contact us" page for further details.
